The story of the colourful mosaics
The Archaeological Park of Pafos is one of the most important sites of Cyprus and has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list since 1980. The Park includes sites and monuments from the 4th century BC to the Middle Ages, while most remain date to the Roman period. The intricate mosaic floors of four Roman villas (the houses of Dionysos, Theseus, Aion and Orpheus) form the impressive epicenter of the finds and depict various scenes from Greek Mythology.
This is the largest and most well-known of the mosaic houses.
Discovered by accident in 1962, excavations carried out by the Department of Antiquities brought to light remains of a large and wealthy residence from the Roman period with exquisite coloured mosaics decorating its extensive floor area. Subsequently named the House of Dionysus due to the large number of mosaics featuring the god of wine, this complex is the largest and most well-known of the mosaic houses.
Hermes Airports worked closely with the Department of Antiquities and the Cyprus Institute to capture any detail with High-Definition cameras from the colourful mosaics in the House of Dionysus. As a result, it is the renewal to one of the main staircases in Larnaka Airport, connecting the Departures with the Arrivals Area.
Establishing a Cypriot feel full of culture, beauty, and vibrancy
Since day one, Hermes Airports introduced the concept "Sense of Place" at the terminals of Pafos and Larnaka International Airports. The principal objective was for the airports to express and promote the rich cultural identity of the island through a modern interpretation that would be reflected with artwork created by local artists.
Ten years later, Hermes enhanced the Sense of Place concept and broadened the idea beyond art. With the guidance of a curator, research was carried out based on a long process of material collection related to Cyprus, which took into consideration all the characteristics that signify today's life on the island through its evolution in history.
